Sexy, Beachy Hair in 5 Easy Steps
Insider tricks to achieving those perfectly tousled waves—without leaving your house
We probably don't have to tell you that one of the best things about spending a day at the beach is the sexy hair you come home with. When you can't hit the shore, re-create the tousled look in your own bathroom with these simple wave-making tips.
Start in the Shower

Instead of lathering up and conditioning with your usual shampoo and conditioner, switch to a duo that helps build a tousled texture while cleansing and softening your strands.
Try: Bumble and bumble Surf Foam Wash ($24) and the Surf Crème Rinse ($25; bumbleandbumble.com), which contain minerals and sea botanicals that create body similar to the I-just-took-a-dip-in-the-ocean fullness you get at the beach.
Coax Out Waves

Post-shower, towel-dry hair and detangle it with a wide-tooth comb. Spritz strands with a generous amount of sea salt spray like Sachajuan Ocean Mist ($28; barneys.com).
Next, work a dollop of curl cream from the mid-shaft through the ends, says Tommy Buckett, stylist at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in New York City. A great option: Organix Smooth Hydration Argan Oil & Shea Butter Curl Enhancing Yogurt ($8; walgreens.com). This helps give waves piece-y definition and tames frizz.
"From here on out, it's all about the scrunch," Buckett says. His foolproof instructions: Flip your hair upside down and cup sections with your palms, scrunching up toward the root.
Dry Right

Slip a diffuser attachment onto your blow dryer and diffuse hair until it's about 80 percent dry. "The diffuser will mimic how the wind dries your hair at the beach," Buckett says. As you blow-dry, use your fingers to twist hair into one-inch sections. Then scrunch them up toward the roots.
Try: T3 Soft Touch Diffuser ($30; sephora.com).
Cheat a Little Bit

If you're left with a whole lot of body but no real waves, whip out a curling iron and create a few, Buckett says. Wrap small, face-framing sections around a one-to-two-inch barrel iron, leaving the ends free. You'll get defined waves that don't look too perfect.
Try: John Frieda Loose Curls 1 1/4-inch Barrel ($20; drugstore.com).
Salt It Again

To really enhance the sexy, beachy feel, repeat the spritz-and-scrunch one more time, Buckett says. Easy, breezy, "ocean-sprayed" hair-done!
